Cuddy MK 3

If you look back my Gull posts you will see various attempts at a Cuddy and infills between the mast and foredeck. Some fabric and two variations of plywood ones.

First Plywood , flat

The plywood ones were made from DIY ply and construction adhesives. The last one was modified very quickly and in infill glued in with grab adhesive and glass fibre tape, that is the adhesive replaced the usual resin. The cheap ply was delaminating but I was happy with the design.

The final ply, triangle of ply added to the flat one

Rather than recreating the final design in better ply I used the old cuddy as a male mould and produced a Kevlar epoxy copy. This has 3D printed reinforcement and the edges stiffened with wood. Like all my projects it’s a bit crude but it gets me there.

Still not compete in the final fitting stage
As above still fitting
In action

The design has a number of advantages

  • Keeps some of the spray out to the boat
  • There is a massive amount of storage under it and bags are kept dry
  • I can tie the mast to it when raising the mast which speeds up rigging considerably
  • Orange elastic for storage of painter and halyard
