Gull re-imagining reconstruction started

I’m busy renovating the house so the Gull and other boats have taken a back seat. Yesterday I managed a little bit of boat time.

The MK1 doesn’t have any return on the gunwale to act as spray a deflector. I added timber to mine and it helped stopping water getting on board.

In the re-imagining I wanted to take this further. I glued on and then carved and filled so polyurethane foam to create a rough male mould. The foam will be removed and leave an appropriate 40mm x 40mm box sectioned Gunwale.

Foam mould under construction

I wanted to add plastic parcel tape to the foam to allow for removal but despite repeated vacuuming this would not stick. I painted with PVA to stop the resin be sucked too much into the foam. Time will tell how easy the foam will be to remove. There are chemical foam removers if it proves difficult. I have now added two layers of 200g CSM with a good overlap and then taped on top. The polyester resin is pre pigmented white / cream.

Laminated up

Once the other side is done and the foam removed I will glass inside the channel down onto the hull so there is a really strong bond to the hull. While the laminate was still setting I compared the flexibility with the other side, it’s considerably stiffer, the foam is still in it though.

The challenge now is to replicate on the other side something that looks similar.
